In the past few weeks the whole Finnish media was excited to announce that a Finnish teacher have a good chance to get awarded to Varkey Foundation’s this year’s $ 1 million Global Teacher Prize. In 2018, Experience Workshop’s colleague, Jukka Sinnemäki might get the honoring title of the “Best Teacher of the World”. Earlier, in 2016 we have followed the news with a similar excitement, when an other teacher friend of Experience Workshop, Maarit Rossi has made it into the best ten finalists of the Global Teacher Prize.

In Varkey Foundation’s search for the “Best Teacher of the World”, Jukka Sinnemäki has made it to the top 50 from 40.000 applicants, and in March 2018, he will be among the VIP-guests of the educational world congress on pedagogical skills organized in Dubai. The Global Teacher Prize is supported by leading politicians and decision-makers, and it calls the attention to the importance, diversity and challenges of the teaching profession.

Jukka Sinnemäki, as a primary school teacher in Jyväskylä, was among the first ones, who has provided a professional support to Experience Workshop’s programs in Finland. Currently, he is active in our “Maths in Motion”, and “Polyuniverse in School Education” international Erasmus+ projects. His students are very active in Experience Workshop’s Micro:bit -related projects as well. In addition to this, Experience Workshop runs a STEAM Club for the 3-6 grader students of Jukka’s school, the Christian School in Jyväskylä.

Recently, Jukka Sinnemäki was a guest in the “Zones of Potential Construction”, Chris Brownell’s podcast from AIMS Center, California.
The podcast episode provides us with an opportunity to hear from Jukka on what a strong emphasis in the whole child can accomplish in the classroom. Jukka describes how the autonomy teachers in Finland has allowed him the freedom to continuously analyze, experiment with, and mold his pedagogical approach to increase the motivation and overall health of his students while he teaches mathematics and science. His holistic approach to learning, acknowledgement of the needs of the child to move and be active has helped him become a risk-taking innovative teacher whose students are showing dramatic results in both attitude and achievement. The coming revolution in education will be realized when all students can learn in environments that foster full inclusion of each person in the room, and Jukka’s classes are well on their way in this direction already.
