Education Research – Sensual Mathematics – STEAM: Cambridge Mathematics is hosted in Finland by Experience Workshop

Cambridge Mathematics is a University of Cambridge project in partnership with Mathematics and Education Faculties, Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment. Between April 25-29, 2017, Cambridge Mathematics visits to Finland and hosted by Experience Workshop Math-Art Movement.

Through speaking to policy makers, subject specialist curriculum designers and educational researchers Cambridge Mathematics aims to learn about: how the Finnish mathematics curriculum was developed and written (especially primary and lower secondary). Whether there is an emphasis in learning through play, exposures or experiences in mathematics? Any recent innovations in the mathematics curriculum and related research findings? How IT is embedded into the maths curriculum and its assessment?

April 26, 2017: From Educational Assessment to Sensual Mathematics in Helsinki

On April 26, 2017, Experience Workshop brings together Cambridge Mathematics with University of Helsinki’s Centre of Educational Assessment. The meeting will be organized at University of Helsinki’s building at Siltavuorenpenger street 3, by Professor Hannu Salmi and his colleagues, Risto Hotulainen, Mari-Pauliina Vainikainen, Helena Thuneberg, Sirkku Kupiainen, and Johanna Rämö.

After University of Helsinki, Cambridge Mathematics is heading to the Heureka Science Center, to meet with Professor Kirsi Peltonen, the project leader of the upcoming Sensual Mathematics Exhibit and Heureka program managers Paula Havaste and Siina Vasama.

April 27, 2017: Looking at the Kaleidoscope of International Mathematics Education Research and Inaugurating the STEAM Collection of University of Jyväskylä’s Faculty of Information Technology

Vladimir Bulatov: Hyperbolic Kaleidoscope II.

At University of Jyväskylä’s Agora Building education researchers and teachers from Finland, USA and Japan will review latest trends in mathematics and technology education. In addition to Cambridge Mathematics’ team Christopher Brownell, Charla Griffy-Brown, and Chihiro Watanabe will contribute to international comparisons and context. The conference is organized by Experience Workshop’s director Kristóf Fenyvesi, and Finnish scientific coordinator Osmo Pekonen and researcher Laura Tuohilampi, whose latest book, Matikka-nälkä (Math-Hunger) got significant media-attention.

At 6.00 PM University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Information Technology’s Agora Collection of Mathematical Art & STEAM Learning will be opened. It will include István Orosz’s Northernmost collection of artworks and highlights on a novel way the cultural, artistic and educational potential in Faculty of Information Technology’s (broad and integrative approach, towards University’s core fields, including human technology. The basis of the Agora Collection is purchased from the world largest and internationally renowned mathematics and arts community, Bridges Organization’s congress, which was hosted by JYU FIT in 2016 August in Jyväskylä.

April 28, 2017: STEAM Clubs, BBC micro:bit & Other Innovative Practices in Finnish Schools. Visiting the Christian School and University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Teacher Education

In the morning, Cambridge Mathematics’ visit in Jyväskylä’s Christian school will be hosted by the teacher of the school, Jukka Sinnemäki. Topics will be including students’ tech and coding projects with BBC micro:bit; Christian School’s STEAM Club; Innovative assessment of children’s well-being and activity level with FirstBeat and Polar technologies; & observing a mathematics class. In the afternoon, mathematics education researcher, Markus Hähkiöniemi will guide the group in University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Teacher Education.
